History

Former prison cell of the Lourdes municipal jail

The Cachot — French for "dungeon" — was a single damp room in a former prison in the old town of Lourdes where the Soubirous family lived in destitution when the apparitions began in February 1858. Fourteen-year-old Bernadette, her parents and four siblings were reduced to sharing this 16 m² space after a sequence of misfortunes left them homeless and unable to pay rent elsewhere. It was from this room that Bernadette set out to gather firewood on the morning of 11 February 1858, the day of the first apparition. The Cachot is preserved exactly as it was, its bare walls and sparse furnishings a vivid reminder of the poverty that was the context of Mary's first appearance.

The Soubirous Family's Poverty

The Soubirous family had fallen from modest miller's prosperity to absolute destitution by 1857. François Soubirous, Bernadette's father, had lost the family mill; accused of theft (a charge later dropped), he had spent time in prison in this very building. The Cachot was lent to the family by a relative who kept it for storing old tools. It had no proper flooring, minimal furniture and severe damp. Bernadette suffered from asthma throughout her life, worsened by these conditions.

Bernadette's Departure on the Morning of 11 February

On the morning of the first apparition, Bernadette left the Cachot with her sister Toinette and a friend, Jeanne Abadie, to gather firewood and bones from the banks of the Gave de Pau, items that could be sold for a few centimes. It was this errand of poverty that led her to Massabielle. The contrast between the squalor of the Cachot and the beauty described at the Grotto could not be more stark, and is central to understanding why the apparitions moved the world.

Visiting the Cachot Today

The room is maintained as a place of pilgrimage by the Sisters of Our Lady of Lourdes. Visitors enter through a small courtyard and are invited to pray in the room itself, which contains a statue of Our Lady. The sparse furnishings — a chest, a straw mattress frame, a wooden crucifix — are authentic to the period. A short video presentation in multiple languages plays in the adjoining room.
