About This Route
The walk from Lourdes to the Shrine of Notre-Dame de Bétharram is one of the oldest Marian pilgrimage routes in the Pyrenees, predating the Lourdes apparitions by centuries. The route follows the Gave de Pau river upstream through a dramatic limestone gorge, passing through the village of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre and arriving at the 17th-century Baroque sanctuary of Bétharram, home to the famous Bétharram Caves and a religious community. This is a profoundly peaceful walk for pilgrims who want to extend their Lourdes experience into the surrounding countryside.
