Pyrenees panorama including Vignemale (3,298 m)

A short funicular ride or two-hour hike above Lourdes brings you to the summit of Pic du Jer (1,000 m), where the Pyrenees spread out before you in dramatic panorama. On a clear day you can see peaks exceeding 3,000 metres, including the Vignemale (France's highest Pyrenean summit) and the iconic silhouette of the Cirque de Gavarnie. The summit also features a cave exploration attraction and a mountain restaurant. For pilgrims, it offers a contemplative space above the noise of the Sanctuary, a place to sit in silence before the Creator's grandeur.

The Funicular

The historic Pic du Jer funicular has operated since 1900. The three-minute ride ascends through beech and oak forest before emerging onto the open summit plateau. A one-way ticket allows you to hike down via the forest trail. The funicular station is a 10-minute walk from the Sanctuary centre.

Panoramic Views

The summit viewing terrace looks south over an astonishing sweep of the Pyrenean frontier range. You can identify major peaks with the help of the orientation table. Early morning and late afternoon offer the clearest visibility. In winter, the peaks are snow-capped and the view is even more dramatic.

Pilgrim Tips

  • Buy the funicular + cave combo ticket for the best value
  • The summit restaurant serves regional Pyrenean cuisine, tartiflette and Bigorre mountain charcuterie
  • The hike down takes about 90 minutes through beautiful forest
  • Binoculars are useful for identifying distant peaks
