Entering the Baths of Lourdes is a uniquely intimate and profound act. Pilgrims queue patiently, then are guided by volunteer attendants (brancardiers or handmaids of Our Lady) into private cubicles where they undress and wrap in a white sheet before being led to the cold spring-water pool. A brief prayer is said, and the pilgrim is lowered backwards into the water. Many describe the experience as transformative, not because of any physical sensation (the water is cold), but because of the act of total surrender and trust in which it consists.
The Volunteers
The Baths are staffed entirely by volunteers of the Lourdes Hospitalité, men and women who give their time to serve pilgrims with extraordinary gentleness and care. Many are pilgrims themselves who return year after year. Their quiet reverence sets the tone for the entire experience.
Healings Associated with the Baths
Since 1858, the Lourdes Medical Bureau has investigated thousands of reported cures. Of these, 70 have been officially recognised as miraculous by the Church. Many more pilgrims report inner healing, peace, relief from anxiety or depression, and a sense of renewed hope, that does not appear in medical records.
For Pilgrims with Disabilities
The Hospitalité has extensive experience serving pilgrims with physical disabilities, serious illness and mobility challenges. A dedicated session for the seriously ill (the "Bains des malades") is organised within most organised pilgrimage programmes. The brancardiers are trained to assist with all levels of need.
