The Torchlight Marian Procession is the iconic evening ceremony of Lourdes, arguably the most visually and spiritually powerful event at the Sanctuary. As darkness falls, thousands of pilgrims gather at the Grotto, each carrying a lit candle. The procession winds slowly along the Esplanade to the Basilica forecourt as the crowd sings the "Ave Maria" in Latin and then in dozens of languages simultaneously. The sight of thousands of flickering candles reflected in the Gave river, the mingled voices of pilgrims from every nation, and the soaring Basilica spire illuminated against the night sky combine to create an experience that few who witness it ever forget.
History
The tradition of candlelight processions at Lourdes dates from the earliest years after the apparitions. The formal Torchlight Procession as it is known today was established in the 1870s and has taken place every evening throughout the pilgrimage season for over 150 years, continuing through two world wars, though on a reduced scale.
The Music
The procession is led in song, beginning with the "Ave Maria" of Lourdes (the iconic Sanctuary hymn composed in 1873) and continuing with Marian hymns in French, English, Spanish, Polish, Italian and other languages. A live choir and amplification system allows the singing to be heard throughout the Esplanade.
Practical Information
Candles are distributed free of charge near the Grotto before the procession begins. Arrive by 20:30 to join from the start. The procession is accessible for wheelchairs and voiturettes. In case of heavy rain, a shorter indoor ceremony takes place in the Basilica crypt.
