The Sacrament of Reconciliation — Confession — is one of the defining graces of a Lourdes pilgrimage. Our Lady asked Bernadette to "pray for sinners", and the Sanctuary has taken this seriously for over 160 years. English-speaking priests are available in the Chapel of Reconciliation every day of the pilgrimage season. The atmosphere of Lourdes — the Grotto, the Baths, the processions, the proximity to suffering — creates a uniquely favourable interior environment for this encounter. Many pilgrims describe their Lourdes Confession as one of the most important spiritual experiences of their lives.
How to Receive the Sacrament
No appointment is needed. Visit the Chapel of Reconciliation (a clearly signed building within the Sanctuary Domain) during opening hours and ask a volunteer welcomer for the English confessional. You will wait briefly in a peaceful sitting area before being called to one of the individual confessionals. The sacrament takes 10–20 minutes. Priests are experienced, compassionate and accustomed to pilgrims who may have been away from the sacrament for many years.
If You Are Returning After a Long Absence
Lourdes is renowned as a place where people return to the sacraments after long absences. The priests here are specifically selected and trained for pastoral gentleness. Examination of conscience leaflets in English are freely available at the chapel entrance. If you are uncertain of the words or form, simply tell the priest at the start; he will guide you gently through the process.
The Grace of Lourdes
The theological tradition holds that Mary, as Our Lady of Lourdes, intercedes for sinners with particular power at this sanctuary. Many pilgrims report that the Confession they make at Lourdes has a depth and freedom to it that goes beyond their ordinary experience of the sacrament. Whether this is the atmosphere, the intercession, or simply the concentrated openness that a pilgrimage creates, the effect is widely attested.
Practical Tips
- ✓Early morning (07:30–09:00) is the quietest time; midday can have longer queues
- ✓The preparation booklets available in the chapel cover the examination of conscience thoroughly
- ✓Our pilgrimage leaders will advise on timing so that Confession fits naturally into your programme
- ✓After Confession, many pilgrims go directly to the Grotto or the Baths: allow time for this transition
